Puliyogare(Tamarind Rice)


We had been for a Niagara trip this weekend. Amma made tamarind rice for the trip. My friends were all praises for the rice and that made amma happy.

Ingredients:

1 cup basmati rice/white rice
1/4 cup thick pulp extracted from tamarind
4 tbsp peanuts
1 tbsp chana dal
2 green chillies
2 whole red chillies
1/4 spoon mustard
1/4 spoon fenugreek seeds
1 tbsp curry leaves
1 pinch asafoetida
1 pinch turmeric powder
1/2 tbsp coriander powder
1/2 tbsp chilly powder
1/2 tbsp cumin powder
2 tbsp sesame seeds (roasted and powdered)
2 tbsp oil
salt to taste

Method:

1.Cook the rice.
2.Heat a pan and add oil.Add whole red chillies to the hot oil.
3.Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.Add fenugreek seeds,chana dal and peanuts and roast well.
4.Add green chillies,curry leaves,asafoetida and saute for 1 minute.
5.Add coriander powder,turmeric powder,chilly powder,cumin powder and sesame powder.
6.Add the tamarind paste and salt.Boil for 5 minutes.
7.Mix the cooked rice to the paste and serve.

PS: This paste can be prepared and stored in fridge in an air tight container for months.Mix it with cooked rice when required.
