Squid Ularthiyathu

Squid is known as the 'ink bottle of the sea' (kadalile mashi kuppi). Here in U.S squid can be found in most of the Greek,Italian and seafood restaurants. But here they call squid - calamari. The most popular food found here is fried calamari that resembles onion rings.

The recipe that follows is a naadan variety of squid that my amma makes.

1/4 tsp Garam masala powder
2 tbsp Oil
Salt to taste

Preparation:

1.Heat oil in a pan.
2.Add ginger and garlic.Stir for 1 minute.
3.Add chopped onion, curry leaves and green chilly and fry till golden brown.
4.Add chilly powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder. Stir for 1 minute on 'Low flame'.Do not burn the masala.
5.Drain off all water from squid. Add squid and tomato into the pan.
6.Add salt to taste. Cook for 3 minutes.
